Some translations use "one word" instead of "one command." And that word that the second part of this verse is talking about is agape love -- unconditional love that denies “self” for the care and compassion of others. Today's devotional writer tells us, "The season of Advent is a perfect time to put such love into practice. After all, Advent is all about preparing our hearts for the celebration of Jesus' birth." Perhaps our challenge today should be to know that the way to love our neighbors is through getting to know Christ, who is the living Word of God.

This is a picture of my neighborhood. My husband have been a part of this neighborhood since 1978. We raised our children in this neighborhood. We've watched people come and go and our neighborhood change. There are only two families on the block that have lived in the neighborhood as long as we have. As I drove through our neighborhood today, I couldn't help but think of all of the caring friends that we have had throughout the years. Although most of them don't live here anymore, they are still a part of this neighborhood.
